Question of Month.
Q-What are the requirements to play the white forward men’s tees?
A-There are no age requirements used to play from any tee, even though some courses or some friends may tell you differently.   When you enter your scores into the handicap machine it will automatically change to the default tees (green for men, red for ladies).  Your handicap is based on those default tees no matter what tee you play, men or women that wish to play any other tee rather than default tees will have their handicap adjusted either up or down according to which tees you wish to play.

Thank you

From the Pro ~ July 2017

June was a busy month for the Golf Shop dodging the raindrops, we hope that you are getting your daily recommended amount of golf.

Sharpen the Saw-It is time to focus on the weak parts of your game instead of hiding your head in the sand.  If you have bogey on every hole except for those holes that you three or four putt it is time to work on your distance control or your green reading.  Most of us will be focusing on hitting it further off the tee instead of focusing on chipping it closer or working on our putting.  Here is a drill that helps bring your weaknesses into focus: count how many shots that you take inside of 100 yards, chips, pitches, and yes even putts.  I think that your thought process will change.

We have plenty to talk about in this edition including upcoming events, past events, and travel dates.  The July calendar shapes up like this:

  • Monday July 3rd-We will treat as a Holiday, the Golf Shop will be only open until 4pm. Carts will not be given out after 12 Noon, you may walk after that time however the bagroom and all golf facilities will again close at 4pm.

Question of the Month: I have been playing with pretty much the same group for a very long time however in the last few years I have been noticing that their attitude has changed as their handicap has moved upward.-Lost in Ligonier

A-Here are a few ways to approach the situation: 1) suggest that maybe we should try moving up a set of tees, from blue to green, or green to white or hybrid, or from red to teeing up in the fairway.  The stigma of playing forward tees no longer exists. 2) start by mentioning that maybe you should take a look at your reaction that you have to certain shots-

Good Luck

Other Golf Shop happenings:

The US OPEN. The Golf Shop will be having a pool to help peak interest in the National Open festivities.  For $10 you get to pick your players, they are as follows: -a long hitter, a foreign born player, and a player who is top ten in greens in regulation.  Don’t worry it is much easier than how it reads.

The Practice Range –the tee is now being cut 2 times per week to ensure better conditions when you go to practice. The range will close for scheduled weekly cutting starting at 5pm on Sunday evening and remain closed until Monday at 9am.  Thank you for your patience with the soggy weather.

Guest Policy– When bringing a guest to our club please remind them of our policy of dress to alleviate any uncomfortable situations. As the presenting member you are solely responsible for your guest’s actions during their visit to our facility.

When we think about sharpening the saw we forget that self talk can be the biggest detriment to holding back our ability.  Instead of talking yourself into consequences that tighten up your muscles you can work on your breathing.  Do this drill to lighten yourself up, close your eyes, breath in thru your nose for 5 seconds, hold the breath in for 5 seconds and then blow it out for 4 seconds.  You will be amazed at what happens when you truly concentrate on your breathing instead of your swing.

Question of the Month

Dear Golf Shop,

Q-Why is the Golf Shop strict with flags on no cart path days, I have been a member for a really long time and am sure I know where everything is wet.  Are they possibly being too inflexible with the golf course? -Fourteen years a Member

A-We are sure that you are aware and take very good care of the course like fixing all ball marks, repairing divots, and keeping carts on paths near tees and greens.  The rules of cart path only are as follows: a) will cart traffic cause playing conditions to deteriorate since the golf course is the very first priority b) safety of cart operators.

From the Pro ~ May 2017

April has been a good month for golf if you just bundle up a bit.  We hope that you can join us to enjoy the great weather and wonderful golf course.

Events to keep on your schedule:

Memorial Day Weekend– you can play any amount of days you wish, have as many partners as you wish, and the event will be scored over 3 days. This Pick Your Partner event will be a fun filled challenge, you may even have a different partner all 3 days.  Simply pick a partner for Saturday, Sunday, or Monday and play best ball of 2, we will pay low team money for the day, as well as the overall weekend low teams.

The Men’s Invitational June 1st-2nd-3rd– We currently have a few team spots yet to fill, please call the Golf Shop to sign up your team. That weekend will once again be one of the great highlights of this Golf Season.  It is by far an exciting event as well as fun for all, don’t put it off any longer and come join us for some fun.

Big Skins-Tuesday July 4th

Member-Member Saturday-Sunday July 15th-16

The Team Match Play Championship-We are still in search of teams for the TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP. We had 28 teams last year sign up to play but this year we have a few less at this current time.  Just as a reminder that you can play from the Green, White, or Red tees, whichever suits your game.  Having spoken with players that played in 2016 many were disappointed to not make it out of the first round but please don’t let that hold you back from signing up to play this year.  When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb he was asked by a reporter that knew he had failed on many an occasion “Thomas how many times did you fail at inventing this light?”  Thomas replied “I did not fail at inventing the light bulb I just found 1000 ways that did not work.”  Don’t let fear slow you down.

I would believe that most of us know when inclement weather is approaching with all the smart devices we have in our possession at any one time.  Our weather siren is sounded for emergency purposes only!  If you hear it please come in off the golf course or find immediate shelter, anyone playing through a siren blast may not only be tempting fate but also putting your family or friends in danger.  We have no option but to report those that do not follow emergency weather siren blasts to the Board of Directors.

Demo Days-Come join us for demo days and receive a special coupon.

  • Ping Tuesday May 2nd– 3:30-7

Member Guest Winners

Opening Day on April 29th was unfortunately cancelled due to heavy rains the night before and a forecast for more rain that day.

The innovation in clubs will certainly made your head spin with so many options, let us help you through the info overload.  This year we have purchased an Ernest Sports Launch Monitor, and have had very good luck with fitting both Woods and irons this early season.  We have more demo clubs this year than ever before, multiple demo putters and quite a few demo wedges.  The Golf Shop carries everything from great value starter sets for both ladies and men such as Tour Edge, through top line equipment such as Ping, Titleist, Taylormade, Mizuno, and Callaway.  Let your local Golf Shop help you instead of some big box store that does not know your name and doesn’t care if you ever come back following your purchase.

The Golf Shop has a new label process to avoid lost clubs.  If you are tired of your labels that you did at home continually peeling and flaking, well these are for you, they include Name, address, and phone number.

Lets Sharpen The Saw-if you tense up under pressure hitting shots till your hands bleed will not help, often it is not bad swings that lead to bad shots, but bad thoughts prior to swinging that leads to bad shots.  Things that sound like “don’t do that again, or you are so dumb, don’t do that.”  I am often reminded of the story of Gary Player who one week was playing on slow greens and told his roommate at the time “I Love Slow Greens” and won the tournament.  The next week the greens speed was extremely fast, and Player remarked to that same roommate “I Love Fast Greens” and also won that week.   Imagine the impossible then figure out a way to make it happen!

Upcoming Exchange Days (updated as of 4-25)  Cart Cost is Now $25–Full Golf Members Only

New Range Hours-The Practice Range will close on Sunday evening at 5 pm so that weekly work can be performed.  The range will be open 100+ hours a week but must be closed once a week to sharpen the saw.

Masters 2017 Finish

I thought it was great TV on Sunday afternoon from Augusta, outcome of the tournament does not always matter as much as the beauty and excitement that is the Masters.  Sergio Garcia’s Masters win coupled with his Ryder Cup play and worldwide victories have made him one of the top players in the Tiger Woods era.

We had two Masters events that were happening in the Golf Shop last week and the winners were:

Par 3 Pick Em

Speith-Kuchar-Snedeker 138 -6

Tie 1st-Mike Goodwin and John Hepler $100 ea Day-Kuchar-Schwartzel 141 3rd Garrett Adams $60 Day-Fowler-Snedeker 143 Tie 4th Dot Stein and Jay Vreeland $30 ea

From the Pro ~ April 2017

The better weather finally made it back to Pennsylvania this week and for the first time this season we were busy.  It was a great feeling for all the golfers to be in shorts and just a golf shirt.  We are looking forward to a great season!

Sharpen The Saw for the month of April.  This past Monday I was privileged to be in a group that had Hank Haney as the guest speaker.  While he had a lot of great technical ideas he offered one of the most simplistic ways to lower your handicap.  His 3 step plan to lower your handicap was: 1) no penalty shots during your round, no ob, water, unplayable lies, etc. 2) when chipping, pitching, or playing from a bunker you must always get the shot on in one 3) no 3 putts.  He simply called a round that strokes were added in any one of these 3 bullet points as a should of, would of, could of round.

Opening Day Sat April 29-Both Ladies and Men will play Best 2 of 4 full Handicap, teams will be random selected by computer.  A Shotgun start at 9:15 with breakfast to start at 8am, please sign up with the Golf Shop by 27th at 5PM.

Masters Par 3 Wednesday April 5- Par 3 Tournament, 5:30 Shotgun Start, you may make your own teams or be paired by the Golf Shop.  The event will be individual stroke play with Proximity prizes on each hole.  The entry will include a draw party following play and all participants will receive a player in the Masters Pool Tourney.

Ladies Day-Tuesday Opening Day will be Tuesday April 18th at 10am.  April-May-September will start at 10am, while June, July, and August will begin at 9am.  General play will be able to start up until ½ hour prior to the start of Ladies Day.

The Golf Shop has a few rules that both you and your guests should know:

  • Upon your arrival and prior to going to the range or playing golf each Member and guest must check in at the Golf Shop. Any guest that does not check in will be charged to the sponsoring member.
  • Tee-Times are always required
  • The new wave of poly athletic clothing without collar is not allowed on the golf course. All shirts must have a collar or mock turtles must have a 1 ½ inch neck.

Thank you for your continued support.

Welcome New Season

Welcome to the 2017 Season!  We are excited for some great play this year and hopefully your New Year’s Resolution was to play more GOLF!  This winter has been quite mild so far and that leads to the hope that we will get a great jump on the upcoming golf season.

The theme for this year “Sharpen the Saw”.  First, it means that you must take care of yourself-you may need to begin an exercise program, or to take more time away from your stress to make time for yourself.  Second, you must work on what needs work; it may be your chipping and pitching game or your putter, but you need to stop neglecting your trouble areas or you will never get better.  Third, help sharpen your saw by discontinuing negative self talk (this may be the hardest section to complete).  For most players negative self talk is the only voice they know while playing and I am quite sure that the most negative of us has no idea how to shut out that voice.  Here are a few ways to help change your voice: a) after you hit a shot try to not react positive or negatively no matter where the shot ends up, be neutral. b)  keep your eye on the horizon with your head up. As I drive the course in the Summer I can always tell who is playing well and who is not just by the direction their eyes are looking.  c)  Keep in mind that golf (however important to you) does not define you as a person.  You must approach golf with humility and you will have much more fun while on the course.
